  Topic :    Friendship...
  Thoughts :
If you measure a person’s life by the friends they make, the places they see, and achievements they accomplish, then AlBob lived 3 lifetimes, meeting more, seeing more and doing more than most ever will… And what should console us all; Al leaves us with his spirit for adventure and friendship, and a message; live life everyday like it’s your last, for one day it will be… You’ll be sadly missed mate!   Topic :    A couple of thoughts
  Thoughts :
I've probably only seen Al 3 times in the last 20 years but I have two distinct memories of running with Al. One was at the North Shore Bays Track (as it was then), and Al, Phil and I had just done a track session and decided to finish with a 400m. I chased Al (and that huge stride) hard but never got very close, but did manage to set a PB of 53 something. Thanks Al! It was all downhill in the speed stakes after that. The second is to do with the Sunday runs from Jack's. For some reason, there was period there (probably only a month or so) when Al and I did several 20-milers together on our own. Even in those days 20 miles round the back of Albany, including the Paremoremo loop, and the Albany Bog Stop! was a challenge. You spend a lot of time with someone on runs like that and Al was, as you all know, always positive, laughing, and simply easy to be around. That certainly made the runs easier though we were always glad to hit Wairau Rd (and there was plenty of banter at that point on how bad we were suffering), get to the bottom, slip around the back of the Badminton hall, and drag ourselves those last few hundred meters back to Jack's. Al, it was pleasure and privilege to know you. I know you and Bettina carved out a wonderful life in Germany, and I've no doubt you've left a wide group of friends better off for having known you. And if you pass a broken down toilet block in heaven ... well, you know who's likely to come out. Thanks mate.

Topic :    Our condolences and thoughts for Alans family and closest friends
  Thoughts :
I'm another who was in high school at the same time as Alan, in Auckland / New Zealand. My most sincere condolences to his immediate family Sherrida and Bettina, to his birth family, and to his closest of friends. Whenever I think of Alan, and in part I'm meaning Dan and Alan, and Greg, what comes to my mind are their photos of Hawaii. I tend to think of amazing sporting achievements - of races and sport, and plenty of energy. The many messages and this site itself, is such a tribute to Alan and the sort of person he was. Funny, in some ways: it seems to take a big event, a shock, to remind us of how time is precious, how you can use each moment to be and make others happy, or to sort of lose the moment. The clock ticks, and time moves on. It reminds me how lucky we all are. And mainly, how that we should keep those bigger and positive things in mind, not get bogged down in the smaller day to day stuff. (Geneva, Switzerland)

Topic :    Will miss you heaps
  Thoughts :
Al I knew you for such along time fromwhen we played football for ECB as kids, through intermediate school and then into Jack's pack. You were a great guy who I shared a load of laughs with and enjoyed a huge amount of good time with. When we both competing our "friendly" rivalry bought out the best in me. I'm going to miss you heaps as even though we haven't seen each other for years whenever I thought back to the old times the great memories we shared always boughta smile to my face. My thoughts are with Bettina and Sherrida. A big thanks to Danny for keeping me informed. I still can't believe it. Bye mate.

a toothsome smile, sunny dawn... breaking forth - so far, so close, envelopes us with warmth - booming laugh surges up our tired shore - invigorates, sparkles, recedes.... surging once more - quiet contemplation, still, harmonious bush - absorbs, peaceful, musing on your thoughts - calm waters, powerful flow, turbulent energy cascades - though you are no longer here, you are all around us.

Topic :    Für Alan und Bettina
  Thoughts :
